HELP! New job & criminal background check reports felony conviction – IT IS NOT ME. How can I clear my name?
Have been working in healthcare & education since 1982 where I must have a clean record which I do. Received a promotion to university faculty & was on the job two days for training. Got a call today that I had lied about a 1989 felony conviction they "discovered" (worthless check charges in a county across the state where I have never been). Asked not to return & job status "disqualified". Human resources said I can meet with them Thurs. and prove my innocence–trying to obtain a police background check on myself to show them. They will NOT show me their background check on me so that I can verify for errors. When I contacted police ASAP, they opted to file a report and are working it as a possible identity theft…but I wonder if HR has pulled the wrong person’s record which is not me and it is a clerical error they made. I know there are others in my state with same name. What do I do? I am jobless and my reputation is now ruined in a small area where I am a native.
The state is NC and HR at the state university claimed to run the background check themselves.
First off, go to your local police and file an identity theft report, a copy or at least a glance of you complete criminal history check can be obtained from the police officer you speak with. Secondly, depending on how important this job is to you, hire and attorney to help mediate with your prospective employer. Third, relax and cooperate with HR as much as possible, don’t get angry with them or start blaming them for anything until you have proof, if they really want to hire you they will work with you on this issue.

Social Security Identity Theft: Who’s got your number

Identity Theft is not simply about people using your credit or banking information. Thieves can use your SSN with your name or with someone else’s name. Social Security doesn’t care because they collect on all the people working under that number and they only have to pay benefits to one person…There’s is no way to PREVENT any form of Identity Theft! Why? Because our information is already “out there.” It resides in databases from the Hospital where we were born to County Registrar where we pay property taxes, to the DMV where we have our driver licenses, all we can do is protect ourselves.

Identity Theft Red Flags Prevention Program
On March 20, 2008, CoNetrix launched the Identity Theft Prevention Program online tool designed to help organizations create an Identity Theft Prevention Program, making CoNetrix the first company to provide an online solution for the new Identity Theft Red Flags rules and guidelines.
The online service includes an online tool that helps Financial Institutions create an Identity Theft Prevention Program document, and customized online Identity Theft Red Flags employee training. The service follows the Red Flag rules and guidelines, and through 4 simple steps, enables organizations to create a complete Identity Theft Prevention Program while saving them time and resources. Subscribers of the service can simply log-in, complete a series of questions and download a customized Program document in Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat format. The customized training course can be accessed by employees through the integrated, web-based Learning Management System (LMS) or by simply downloading it in Microsoft PowerPoint format.

Is identity theft a serious crime on Y/A answers? Should I notify the authorities about some suspicious people?
I have noticed lately , several people have tried to pass themselves off as me. It seems that I have upset some people here. Let the record show that from this day forward, I will only ask questions of the serious nature.
You see, I used this forum to escape from my everyday life. The mishaps, the family, and the job are all great. But what no one knows the true pain I must escape everyday, the inhumanity, the suffering.
I am the project leader for the local Abandoned Squirrel Society (A.S.S.). We are a little known group. It is not as fancy as the ASPCA, no one on Animal Planet seems to care enough to do a special show about us. Its a thankless job.
We rescue squirrels displaced by tree removals, from elderly ladies attics and fireplaces, and injured on the highway. Sometimes we rescue whole litters of orphaned baby squirrels who have lost their parents to a Volvo or Mack truck.
We also try to educate the squirrel about road safety issues. Why must they cross? We try to convince them to live on the same side as the tree…there are plenty of nuts to go around. If they must cross, we train them to do the start/stop- back/forth move to avoid the car.
I have seen some that have not been ready and paid the ultimate price. To remember them, and raise money for other programs, we make hats and rear view mirror decorations from the hides. We are hoping to expand to chipmunks and possums, but just do not have the resources to expand that far.
So, you see my friends, (at least some of you) you have taken the only escape I have had these last few months. I am sorry to have offended so many. Regards.
I did not report anybody– I needed a serious question to start with.
NASB- we will be looking for a spokesperson for A.S.S.— I think you would be a good candidate for the cover of our fundraising brochure…
Thank you Lefty– all it takes is one **(tears)**
Jj P—- your a girl? I had just realized I had feelings for you…now this?
Raven– there is an extensive training course….these little guys can bite right thru denim…. their natural instinct is to attack the throat or groin area
My daughter’s sorority has the squirrel as a mascot. I will tell her they need to look up your A.S.S.

Wow, I can’t believe the lives people are forced to live sometimes! That is just awful what has happened to you. The only thing I can offer you at this time is prayer and more specifically, the strength to continue to battle this situation and insight on how to further improve your life.
