ID Theft : Who are the Victims?


I.D. Theft: Latest research shows that up to 6 million Brits believe they’ve been the victim of ID theft, and that the 18-29 year old age group are the main victims and perpetrators. The findings indicate that reported crime figures for identity theft are merely the tip of the ‘I.D Theft Iceberg’

In this interview, Martin Gill ( Professor of Criminology and an identity theft specialist.) reveals what makes us susceptible to I.D theft, and what steps we can take to avoid it.

    Avoid scams
    All spam emails/unsolicited phone calls/letters and faxes are
    scams.
    As a general rule – ANYTHING involving Western Union/money
    gram = Scam.
    If you sell stuff online.. Accept Cash or paypal only.
    If you buy stuff online.. Use Paypal only.
    Remember, if it sounds too good
    to be true, it probably is! NEVER(ever) give out your personal
    information to strangers online or offline! Do not click on a link embedded within any potentially suspicious email. Always be on
    guard.

    victim of ID theft here… lost my purse in a movie theater… immediately canceled credit cards and put a fraud alert on my ssn! (only reason my ssn card was on me was because of recent employment…)
