There have always been criminals in any society. Wherever someone has wealth and enjoys prosperity due to their hard work, some other denizen of society who gives no effort into life comes and along and robs him of it. The most classic example of the criminal.

This breed of criminals would star in the good old mafia films, the ones so outdated they would be in scratchy gray-scale. Aside from their Hollywood glitz surface though, these guys did some bad stuff. Not just the mafia gangs, but street criminals are responsible for most of the destruction and fright many citizens experience now. These people were the ones who left bystanders feeling nervous for their lives, and were bait for sensationalist news reports adding to the hysteria.

These mafia guys committed crimes that rocked the nation. They were the societal rejects, the ones who, when families saw their grim faces rotting in jail, would turn their kid’s looks away, as if their menacing stare had some hypnotic quality. These guys are the cumulative force that the United States walks so carefully with its prison system. It is an interesting matter that such an open system cultivates: you have these seemingly unlimited free choices, yet it is just unconsciously understood and hoped for that you won’t infringe upon them. Unfortunately, while many of us pay mind to these laws, guys like these do not and it rips apart at the moral fiber of our nation.

The criminals of the olden days, the kind that would stop you in a desolate corridor with their various weapons and then pilfer all of your goods, although were at one time the worst of the worst, are child’s play to our bad guys of recent. The criminals of today have one huge advantage: they have assimilated technology into their misdeeds. One might at first consider that technology is with the boys in blue, making it simpler and more efficient to get these criminals, but in fact it helps the crooks to hide themselves. The criminals have become one with the high-tech equipment and become very skilled in its use.

Consider the every day scene of crime A slick criminal who needed to get some cash would see an elegantly dressed individual, and judge their odds of being able to overpower them. Weapons brandished and in a concealed location they would threaten their victim, scare them with a gun, and tell them to hand over the wallet. Once they clean out the billfold, they would instruct the now impoverished person to pretend it never happened. They would then sprint all of the way to their hideout and lay low for a little while, until the police forgot about them.

Back then, there were ways to track the criminal using satellite images and GPS location. It didn’t matter though: with a dedicated police and investigative force, the thief was always apprehended quickly. There was no technology they could use to conceal themselves or make the scene of their crime less obvious. Once they were caught, there was no DNA evidence to connect them, there was just a simple line up and the victim cautiously picked out the offending face.

Technology to the rescue then, right? Not the case. While our steps in producing DNA evidence and other connections, these things also help the suspect evade justice as well. A car is all the technology needs for a criminal to escape nowadays; so what if they know who perpetrated the crime. If they can’t catch them, all of their information and leads are just useless paperweights. Many criminals, like hackers and identity thieves do their insidious business over the Internet, so there is no crime scene!

An intangible crime; the perfect crime. These are hard hitters for law enforcement, as there is no scene of the crime and due to the technological shield the criminal can put up around their location. Another scary thing is that, these identity thieves and hackers, as aforementioned, are seldom caught and brought to justice. So with no viable means to effectively stop them, we can only hope to protect ourselves from their strike. Always be very wary online, and protect yourself with a multitude of Internet security systems. And avoid secluded areas!
