http://www.sileo.com/2009/02/23/is-online-banking-is-safe-from-identity-theft/ Identity theft speaker and expert John Sileo speaking on this video about On-Line banking and identity theft risk. The professional ID Theft speaker gives keynotes seminars and workshops on personal and business privacy.
I am starting to reconsider my opinion that online banking is safer than traditional banking. Primarily because I have been hearing horror stories during some of my identity theft seminars. But now I am seeing it in the mainstream media. Case in point: read this short article in this mornings USA Today about Hackers Swarming Bank Accounts. Im open to your opinions, but I feel like the thieves are starting to win. In a YouTube video post I did some time ago about online banking, I suggested that if your computer is well-protected, you are better to bank online.
But lately, it seems like the thieves are a step ahead. What are your thoughts? Have you had any troubles with identity being compromised because of the types of threats discussed in the article?

According to a new article in the Wall Street Journal, cybercrime has significantly risen 22.3% in 2009 from 2008. Identity thieves and white collar criminals have taken to the internet and caused over $550 million in reported losses. There were also over 60,000 more complaints of cybercrime in 2009. Many experts say the plummeting economy is responsible for the great rise last year.

The article goes on to discuss the new and more technologically savvy way that criminals are stealing our information.

Criminals tactics also are changing, with a growing number of crimes involving malicious applications installed on mobile devices and embedded in news and celebrity gossip Web sites. In this type of crime, Web criminals are using search-engine optimization to allow fake Web sites to rise to the top of searches. When users click on the links or pop-ups, malware or key loggers infect their computers, usually with the intent of hijacking personal and financial information such as bank passwords and account information. Scam artists also are switching from email to social-networking sites to perpetrate phishing scams designed to steal sensitive information from victims.

Top scams now include nondelivery of ordered merchandise, fraudulent emails claiming to be from the FBI seeking personal and financial information, identity theft, credit-card fraud, online auction fraud, and job and investment scams. Online auction fraud, which was a top complaint in the past, has declined and losses have fallen as awareness and auction-site security protections have improved, officials said.

In order to minimize your risk, share as little personal and identifying information on the internet as possible. The less that is out there, the less there is to steal. Verify web addresses and dont click on unknown links or advertisements that come through on email and other sites. If you are the least bit suspicious dont enter financial information onto the site!

Cyber-security Take a Bite Out of Online Crime Online Safety

Cyber-security Take a Bite Out of Online Crime Online Safety Expert on How to Tell If Youve Been a Victim of Cybercrime and Where to Turn to for Help With more and more people using social media sites, cybercriminals are finding new ways to steal personal data, and cybercrime is on the rise. According to the Internet Crime Complaint Center, online fraud was up nearly 170 percent in 2008 compared to the previous year. Unfortunately, many people don’t even know theyve been targeted until their computer slows to a crawl or a strange charge shows up on their credit card sometimes weeks after the fact.

Once you’ve figured out youve been attacked, or if youre simply not sure, what can you do? There’s a lot of work to be done to fix the problem and most people have no idea where to start.

Now, there’s somewhere to turn for help. A new free online resource for consumers and businesses has been created called the Cybercrime Response Unit (CRU) kind of like a first-responder for cybercrime victims. Among other things, it assesses individual situations, provides assistance in reporting the crime to the proper authorities and helps a person secure his or her credit. In addition, the CRU will forensically scan your computer to confirm youve been victimized or if youre safe.

Did you know:

• Identity theft costs U.S. citizens an estimated $6.4 billion annually (US Department of Justice’s (DOJ) National Crime Victimization Survey)
• Since 2005, over 230 reported data privacy breaches exposed the personal information records of over 250 million people. (Privacy Rights Clearinghouse)

Talent/Guest: Paul Kurtz, Cyber and Homeland Security Expert
Paul Kurtz was a member of President Obama’s transition team on cyber-security matters and is frequently interviewed by print and broadcast outlets on the subject of cybercrime. He served in senior positions on The White House’s National Security and Homeland Security Councils under presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. He was also the founding Executive Director of the Cyber Security Industry Alliance, an advocacy group dedicated to ensuring safety on the Web. Currently, he is a partner with the consulting firm Good Harbor, where he advises clients on cyber-security and homeland security issues.

Identity Theft, 10 Million Victims, Expert and Speaker Robert Siciliano www.IDTheftSecurity.com

In 2008, the number of identity theft cases jumped 22 percent to 9.9 million, according to a study released Monday by Javelin Strategy & Research. The good news is that the cost per incident — including losses and legal fees — fell 31 percent to $496.

One reason for the spike in cases is likely the worsening economy. Just last month, 598,000 jobs were slashed across the country and unemployment jumped to 7.6 percent. www.IDTheftSecurty.com
