Do You Know What Your Children Are Doing Online? Tips to Kee

Do You Know What Your Children Are Doing Online? Tips to Keep Your Kids Safe from the Perils of the Web

**October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month** For years, parents have struggled to protect their children from predators, drunk driving, risky behavior and all the other dilemmas teens face. However, a new world has opened up to young people where social networking, gaming and bullying are not easily seen or monitored by parents. This is giving parents good reason to be concerned about what really goes on in the cyberworld, and their need to ensure their family’s online safety.

Many parents have no idea what online activities their kids are participating in, according to a new study by McAfee, a leading internet security company. The study also indicates a lot of teens are not always truthful about what sites they visit or who they are communicating with online. Statistics show that as many as 71% of 13 to 17 year olds have received messages online from someone they don’t know, and experts predict that cybercrime will increase by 300% from 2007-2008.

What can parents do? For starters, experts recommend that you become more involved in your child’s online activities, place your computer in an open area, and talk to your kids about the dangers of the Internet so they recognize suspicious behavior.

Online safety experts Tracy Mooney and Parry Aftab give tips to your viewers on how to keep your children safe online. They also discuss the new survey results as well as protecting yourself against cybercrimes.
